March 2, 2010 08:48 - Go Fly A Kite!

Surely hope they bottled up some of those fierce winds we've been treated to here in Woodbridge, Virginia during the past week.

You know...just in case March 27th is a hazy day without the slightest hint of a breeze. It would be bad news for the 44th Annual Smithsonian Kite Festival.

Hosted by two of our favorite downtown destinations (the Smithsonian and the Air & Space Museum) and one of the "must attend" events throughout the years, it has become even more fun now that we have two more boys in the family - boys who fly their kites on the beach, in the field behind their school playground, in their back yard...

You get the picture - kite flying is so much fun that they even build their own kites!

  • Where? The Washington Monument grounds.
  • When? March 27th 2010 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Here is a schedule of events and there are also competition rules to follow.

This one event is a harbinger of spring and a sure sign that warmer temps are close at hand.

March 2, 2010 13:28 - Hispanic Grocery Stores in Woodbridge, VA

Question:

"Where can I find hispanic grocery stores in Virginia?"

We will narrow our focus to hispanic grocery stores in Woodbridge, Virginia.

With food specialties, a butcher shop and a large selection of imported wines and beers, one of the oldest stores in this area is the Americana Grocery at 13215 Occoquan Road, in Woodbridge 22191. Their telephone number is (793)497-6100.

They are part of a chain of latin grocery stores in the metro Washington DC area.

We just called them to verify their hours of operation as 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

I will double check by doing a "drive-by" as the person who answered my call was very hesitant in their response.

Global Foods at 13813 Foulger Square in Woodbridge, VA 22192 is by far the largest and the best ethnic grocery store in Woodbridge . It carries a huge selection of hispanic specialty foods.

Their telephone number is (703)897-6100. Hours of operation are:

  • Mon-Fri. 9:30 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. Sat. 10:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. Sun. 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m

The produce is incredibly varied and the prices are very competitive. We frequently stock up on their wide assortment of fresh fruit.

Check HERE for weekly sales.

There are numerous small hispanic grocery stores located along Route 1 and around Potomac Mills Mall. We will add them to this listing as we verify their name and exact location. (Go to URL)

Oh..this brings back so many great memories of my sister and I running around the garden on a warm spring day looking for brightly colored, foil wrapped eggs wrapped in fancy ribbons.

Make it a learning experience by taking in the actual history of the Easter Egg and how it became a seasonal tradition. Children will also have the opportunity to make crafts, play games and color

Be sure to call the Visitor Center at (703) 583-6904 to inquire about the event fee.

Mark your calendars for April 3, 2010 - It's the Rippon Lodge Egg Hunt where activities include an egg hunt and colonial games. The fee is $5 per child and children under 2 are free.

Rippon Lodge is located at 15500 Blackburn Road, in Woodbridge, VA 22191. A time has not been given for the Egg Hunt so you might want to call their Office at (703) 499-9812 to avoid disappointment.
