Retirement Travel:
Time To Explore The Options

There are multiple options for retirement travel...

For some people, retirement can be a time of great personal upheaval, due to great change in your daily schedule.

There is also less contact with friends and colleagues from work, and potentially a loss of purpose in life.

Yet, after a lifetime of employment, retirement can also be a time of blossoming and exploration.

Free of the need to work full time, you may finally be able to spin the globe and go anywhere you like.

Travel of all kinds can also be a time to meet new friends of any age, ethnicity, and background, friends that you simply would not meet by staying home.

Years ago, I can recall being offered the choice of a new home in either Bagdad, Amman or Kabul. And to think that my dream choice at the time was Ulan Bator! Sorry...not on the list this time. Already well acquainted with Gengis Khan haunts after years in Afghanistan, I can now travel Mongolia at leisure.

Here are 5 great options for retirement travel:

Travel Alone

Are you accustomed to traveling with a spouse or friend? Have you considered going alone? Any way can be great, though it's healthy and interesting to have some variety, as well. The world can be a different place, depending on your companions. When you travel alone, you may find yourself approached for conversation much more often than when you travel with a companion. Plus, your schedule is always totally up to you; you are free.

Retirement Cruise

The variety of cruise options is impressive. You can find weekend cruises to multi-week cruises; budget cruises to luxury cruises; cruises in cold-weather and hot-weather areas of the world, river cruises and sea cruises, and on and on. The range of prices may surprise you as well, from just a couple hundred dollars to many thousands of dollars.

Learning Vacations

Some skills are perfect for intensive study while on vacation. What are you interested in learning? The range of options is huge, including cooking, dance, music, race-car driving, golf, language, photography and film, writing, and more. This area has exploded in popularity in the last few years, and is an excellent way to meet people and make friends on retirement travel.

Service Vacations

Become a "voluntourist!" Organizations all over the world need help with all kinds of projects. What can you do? Volunteers may build houses as Habitat for Humanity does in the United States, plant trees, build trails, teach English, care for children, care for elderly people, provide medical care, work at archaeological sites, work at marine research projects, and more. Another, similar option is to volunteer for emergency relief efforts conducted after disasters like flooding, hurricanes, and earthquakes.

Kenya safari
We offer safari to Masai mara, beach holidays in Kenya, luxury tented camps in Kenya, honeymoon safari and destinations in Kenya, Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro climbing and bungee jumping in Kenya.

Working Vacations

Many people combine their travel with earning a paycheck, often in a totally different endeavor from their former career. If you have an RV, you could try your hand at working as a campground host/hostess. These jobs are often located in beautiful, scenic areas, and don't require long, grueling days or full 40-hour weeks. You could also set up your own business selling art, photographs, or jewelry; or, if you have expertise that people will pay for, you can set up shop anywhere you like. Have accounting skills? You could prepare tax returns for people. Can you teach cooking, yoga, or meditation? Then create a way to provide your service while you travel. An added benefit: your travel may be tax deductible as well!

Retirement travel can be the start of a new life. Consider your options, then get going!
