The Best in Fresh SeafoodDo you enjoy eating fresh fish? Although, we personally look forward to soft shell crab season during June and July, we eat fish all year around - it's light and can be prepared in so many different cuisines. From everyone's favorite beer battered fish 'n chips, to fried calamari, spicy Cajun style catfish, delicate sole Meunière, pan fried rainbow trout, oysters on the half shell, steamed mussels, clam bakes, grilled swordfish steaks and Teriyaki salmon fillets, there is a recipe for every taste. We were regulars at the Chesapeake Bay Seafood House when it opened near Potomac Mills back in 1985 - remember their all-you-can-eat platters? In fact, our aim is to add some type of fish, in one form or another, to the weekly menu. However, we are quite selective about where we buy our fish.
Unless you are into bass fishing on the Potomac or have access to all the gear required to fish out on the Chesapeake Bay or deep sea fishing off the Delmarva coast, we (in Woodbridge, Virginia)do not have access to large, fresh seafood markets. You could drive down to the Maine Avenue wharf. In years past, we've done that too! Legal Seafoods, McCormick & Schmick or the celebration at Red Lobster - You can find great restaurants both locally and nearby in Old Town Alexandria (ever been to the Fish Market?), the District and Maryland. Recommendations? It depends entirely on how hungry you are. I make a meal out of Legal's steamed mussels appetizer and sometimes i have even ordered two servings. Their Fish 'n Chips platter is enormous. The crab stuffed jumbo shrimp is another favorite as well let's not forget the Sashimi tuna salad. So whether you go for lunch or dinner, bring your appetite as there are wonderful menu selections.
Or...you can prepare super meals right at home! With that in mind, where do we buy fresh fish here in Woodbridge, Virginia? Depends on what is being featured in the weekly supermarket circular, the price and whether it is fresh or previously frozen. Harris Teeter, Safeway, Giant, and Bloom all have great seafood counters but Wegman's, in our opinion, has the best and freshest fish available, in the widest variety.
Be sure to also visit: Actually, if you prefer, you can select ready to cook seafood already stuffed, breaded or wrapped in bacon. To date, we've tried the crab stuffed tilapia, the breaded fillets, the stuffed salmon, the bacon wrapped scallops and the various selections in the hot bar. That is not to say that we only buy fish at Wegman's. We just bought the best looking colossal shrimp at Bloom, and soft shell crabs at Giant. The point is that you can purchase a superb variety of fresh seafood in Woodbridge, Virginia. Oh...and it includes crab meat for crab cakes! Check out our recipes for:
