Supermarket Guide

Long live the neighborhood supermarket!

It may sound like a ridiculous exclamation to many but not to me.

There was a time when shopping for food was more of a "wonder what we'll find today" situation. No need for a grocery list as there were no grocery stores...just sidewalk markets and stalls with unusual produce and mystery meats.

Actually, with many cuts of meat, there was no mystery involved. Send an email if you'd like to know why. It's probably gamier than many visitors would like to read about.

The meals revolved around what we found rather than what we wanted to eat. Every meal was a complete surprise or a repeat performance - we never called them leftovers. It was another meal prepared with the same ingredients - ad infinitum!

Creative cooking was the order of the day and a daily exercise. Years of living "off the land" taught us to either learn to eat what we found or become very creative at preparing the foods we were willing to eat.

In the end, it was much easier to learn to eat what we found...but that's a long story.

Today, with all the supermarkets available locally, plus the ability to print free coupons , or even go virtual and shop with Alice, I still find myself throwing a meal together using whatever ingredients I find. Who needs a grocery list or recipes???

Weis is gone and Food Lion has changed its name but the giants of the food industry remain.

My elderly parents have been using Peapod™ by Giant™ for a couple years now...it is the perfect solutions for the elderly or those who can't get out easily. Just check the Giant weekly specials and then shop Peapod for $10 in FREE groceries.

Safeway™

Bloom™

Our Food Lions "Bloom"ed a few years ago...

Yes, they are different but there are some very good deals to be found in these markets if you shop at a particular time of the day.

We have three stores in the Woodbridge area:

  • Store #2734 at 5227 Waterway Drive in Dumfries, VA 22026 [Montclair]
  • Store #2736 at 12420 Dillingham Square in Lake Ridge, VA 22192
  • Store #2735 at 5592 Staples Mill Plaza in Woodbridge, VA 22193

Harris Teeter™

Got your VIC card?

Harris Teeter opened in 2007 and it is not your ordinary neighborhood supermarket.

As the "anchor" store in the Shops At County Center shopping plaza [12745 Galveston Court, Woodbridge, VA 22192], it is an upscale type food market which draws residents from center county and from Woodbridge.

The store features specialty foods, a huge deli, a sushi counter, a bakery and a fresh "bread" counter, a "Fisherman's Market", a fresh produce "Farmer's Market", restaurant quality meats, a large wine shop and aisles of gourmet and international groceries.

Their website announces weekly specials, promotions and an excellent video collection of recipes, tips and tutorials.

Along with Wegmans, it is my go-to supermarket when I need unique ingredients to prepare many of our traditional family recipes or when I need specialty foods.

Wegmans™

Have you experienced a Wegmans?

Shopping at Wegmans is an outing...not a run to the grocery store. On the other hand, I've done some serious food shopping in this store.

Don't forget to stop by just for lunch or dinner!

We've had an early dinner at the Seafood Bar, many meals from the self-serve islands and a quick snack from the Sushi bar.

We've even used their excellent catering services.

Need details? Click HERE. They're open till midnight...which is a good thing.

Imagine finding the fruits, vegetables, fish, meat, cooking staples and spices of Latin America and Asia all under a single roof and at very competitive prices.

Along with their food specialties such as:

  • Hispanic baked goods [the bread racks look more like a panaderia],
  • Korean Kimchee,
  • Japanese Udon,
  • Chinese Jiaozi,
  • Conk meat,
  • aisles of spices, rice, noodles
  • and canned "specialties"...

you can find unique cuts of fresh and flash frozen meat for fajitas and other specialty dishes.

Looking for daikon, wakame, mirin, surumi, katsuo-bushi or somen to prepare your favorite clear soup?

Maybe you are missing a really good shoyu sauce...you'll be able to select from dozens of types and grades.

There is a bakery, and several small restaurants serving Korean and Chinese food. The Japanese restaurant serves up a selection of very good sushi.

The center aisle of the store is more like a small department store where you will find everything from pots and pans to clothing and videos.

Come explore Global Food. You don't even need a passport to make this trip.

We'll add our recipe for steamed or pan fried pork Chiao-Tzu in the recipe section.

Aldi's Supermarkets

Yes, you too can "Shop Smart" in both Aldi locations - both stores carry wine and beer.

One ALDI market is located at 13291 Gordon Boulevard, Woodbridge, VA 22191.

The store on Gordon Blvd is open Monday-Friday 9am - 8pm; Saturday 9am - 8pm and Sunday 10am - 5pm.

There is another ALDI at 13782 Smoketown Road, Woodbridge, VA 22192 in the same shopping center as Lowe's.

They are open for business on Monday-Friday 9am - 8pm; Saturday 9am - 8pm and Sunday 10am - 5pm

Ethnic Food Markets

Woodbridge has a surprising number of international food markets.

These are not your typical large supermarket but smaller specialty food markets which usually include a restaurant.

We have not discovered them all but I do know where to go when I need some great kebabs and a naan fix.

More supermarket listings to come...
