Virginia Auto Insurance:
Check DMV Before You Drive

There are few ifs, ands or buts about Virginia auto insurance.

Compare the options, study the State insurance requirements, stay safe and cover your rear fender - Check with the Department of Motor Vehicles!

If you just moved to Prince William County or are planning to move to Virginia, be aware that there are minimum requirements for auto insurance.

These requirements must be met before you can purchase license plates or renewal decals for plates.

These minimum requirements include $25,000 for injury or death of one person, $50,000 for injury or death of two or more persons, and property damage coverage of $20,000.

The alternative to buying auto insurance for your car is to pay an Uninsured Motor Vehicle (UMV) fee, which doesn't provide insurance, but allows an owner to drive at his own risk. Business vehicle owners may also have an option of self-insurance or Surety Bonds.

If you drive an uninsured vehicle or haven't paid the UMV fee, you may have your registration and driving privileges suspended.

Reinstatement requires the payment of a $500 fee, filing of a Financial Responsibility Insurance Certificate for three years, and a possible reinstatement fee.

Please note that DMV monitors liability insurance coverage so when you consider the consequences of being uninsured, you might agree that it is better to simply buy auto insurance in Virginia. Time to surf the net for cheap car insurance quotes!
