Wedding Shopping Guide

Planning a wedding? Here is our wedding shopping guide for Woodbridge, Virginia.

Sadly, when you think of the amazing numbers of retail establishments we have within the city limits, we are not blessed with a long list of bridal boutiques.

In fact, your personal *wedding shopping guide* should include venturing outside of Woodbridge [Lorton, Alexandria or Fredericksburg for example] in order to visit a wider selection of full fledged bridal shops - unless you can "say yes to the dress" at David's Bridal at 14403 Potomac Mills Road, Woodbridge, VA 22192.

Located in the Potomac Festival shopping center, right next to the Hard Times Cafe, their telephone is [703]490-8940. The Google Map balloon is somewhat off target.

We've pinned their location a little more accurately with the red "X" showing the location of the Hard Times Cafe and the blue arrow indicating the location of David's Bridal shop.

Don't get me wrong, there is absolutely nothing wrong with . We found perfect bridesmaid dresses and accessories at David's Bridal on several occasions.

In the immediate family, one niece agonized over the perfect dress while the younger bride picked out her dress on the first shopping trip and had it hanging in the closet for months prior to the big day. This definitely allowed her to concentrate on the planning required for her destination wedding.

David's Bridal in Woodbridge, VirginiaBoth my nieces purchased their weddings gowns in bridal boutiques but my daughter found it difficult to find her perfect dress, right off the rack.

We even traveled into Maryland shopping for a dress. She eventually let it slip that she wished she could have a wedding dress which combined several looks - in other words, a custom design.

Good thing Mom sews! Grandmother contributed beautifully sheer, hand embroidered and beaded organza for the bodice. Mom contributed the many yards of silk Duchess satin and silk chiffon for the multiple layers of the full length skirt.

Our Wedding Shopping Guide

A Custom Made Wedding DressYou may want to consider a custom made gown but be sure to check out the incredible selection of designer models, in a full range of prices, before you tackle what could become a stressful project.

We combined several styles and sewing patterns then I set about sewing a one-of-a-kind bridal gown.

Bottom line? Sewing a wedding dress is not a quick and easy project.

You do not want to cut any corners on this special sewing project and using the best of everything, including the highest quality bridal and special occasion fabrics will repay you one hundred fold.

Don't look at this as a "how much can I save by making the dress myself?" question.

Yes, you will save on the total dollar amount but you may incur other costs if you do not have the proper tools to undertake the sewing project.

With years of experience in the custom sewing business, I had already sewn flower girl and bridesmaid dresses, as well as maid of honor and mother of the bride dresses, even a toddler sized ring bearer outfit, so I had everything in the way of sewing equipment.

I also found material at Joann Fabrics, Hancock and Minnesota Fabrics. Remember them? At one time, they had a store in Dillingham Square. Here are some of the tools you will need:

  • A good sewing machine with a few more functions that the basic stitches, and knowledge of certain hand finishing techniques. Many sections of this project require hand sewing.
  • A large surface on which to lay out, cut and work with the fabric and pattern pieces,
  • A dress-form adjusted to the brides measurements - doubles as a "hanger".
  • Sharp scissors and high quality notions
  • A full length mirror.

We found the fabric for the bodice at G-Street Fabrics in Rockville, Maryland [they have a store in Centerville, VA] but had to order the skirt fabric online from Fishman's Fabrics in Chicago.

Wedding Shopping Guide: Local Bridal Shops

Do not overlook premier retailers like Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus for a traditional and non-traditional style dress which could easily double as a wedding dress. Nordstrom has a "wedding shop" and carries dresses for everyone in the wedding party.

David's Bridal features their own bridal gown collection along with Oleg Cassini, Galina and Galina Signature collections. They also offer collections in women's and petite sizes - basically a fit for every size and shape.

Ah...but where will the groom and grooms men find their attire?

S&K is gone...We used their store in the mall for both proms and weddings. Unfortunately, the Men's Wearhouse and Tux located next door to David's Bridal in Potomac Festival, has disappeared - almost overnight. There is another location in the Smoketown Station Shopping Center, at 2784 Prince William Parkway, Woodbridge, VA 22192. Their telephone is [703]491-5606.

Store Hours: Monday through Friday, 10 am to 9 pm; Saturday 9:30 am to 6 pm; Sunday 11 am to 6 pm.

Don't forget to check tux rental possibilities in Manassas, Lorton, Springfield, and into Alexandria.

Wedding Shopping Guide: Wedding Photography

Our opinion? Do not cut corners when it comes to wedding photos...

They are for a lifetime so select a photographer you are not only comfortable with but one who takes the style of photos you would like.

We've seen the digital albums, the printed albums and variations thereof - we preferred the actual prints which you can order in a variety of sizes.

We selected a photographer who basically was part of the wedding party, a "guest" who took photos of every aspect of the big day - from dressing the bride to the getaway.

Ren Rasmussen, a wedding and lifestyle photographer, comes highly recommended!

Wedding Shopping Guide: Rental Services

When it comes to the wedding quote "something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue", you can in fact rent or borrow certain wedding accessories - even the bridal gown and bridesmaids dresses.

Why not consider "borrowing" those expensive extras or the dress itself? Something Borrowed NY ships anywhere in the United States and with added charges - all over the world.

Wondering how to rent a wedding dress? It is easier than you might think.

Many businesses offer to find the perfect dress for you and also give you the opportunity to rent either your wedding dress or list a bridesmaid dress as available for rental.
